Bits and peices of McNeary information -      Go to Other McNearys     Goto Garvagh McNearys
The reason for posting this is to summarize and share some of what is available from various sources on the net - which as "stand alone" information is not related to anything else, but when combined with other known information may be quite meaningful.  Much of it is interpretative, and is subject to typos, carelessness and haste.

Family Search is a great source of information for genealogists and researchers. I have colored Familysearch information in green below.

In looking for McNeary in Ireland, using family search and the Bann Valley site,  as primary sources, I find the largest concentration between 1700 and 1899, to be in CO Londonderry, and particularly in a mostly contiguous group of townlands including Garvagh, Magheramore, Tirkeeran, Mettican, Balllygawley, Luney and a few others.  The spellings of the name from various sources include McNeary, McAneary, McAnary, McNery and a few other iterations.

I have not, myself, checked the Ordnance Survey nor some other appropriate sources.

As to McNearys currently living in Northern Ireland there appear to be a very few in CO Derry, a few in CO Donegal, and several in the Dublin area. Also there are a few named McNeary in Scotland, in England, in Australia, and I think New Zeland.  The rest of them for the most part are in the United States and some in Canada. The US s(hows about 130 phone numbers for McNeary.

What I hope to accomplish with this series of McNeary pages is twofold.
First, I'd hope some people would respond and help us know more about who these people were - what family are they part of, and to either acquire more information on that family, or to be able to link to a site that has that information, or at least to know who is maintaining the genealogy of that family and how to reach them.
Second, I'd like to post the names and places of other McNearys who existed in the past, and again, to try to get them into known families.
=====

On our recent trip to Ireland, we had a great time and learned a good deal about several McNeary groups.

One group I'd like to know more about ends, more or less, with Samuel J. McNeary who died just a few years ago and is burried at the BallyLagan Reformed Church of ireland.  He shares a stone with John and Agnes McNeary (I think of Mettican) and several McNearys.  It would appear that Samuel was a son of John and Agnes.  Can anyone enlighten us on Samuel.  Did he have children, and if so, who?  What else is there to share?   I think I recall seeing his name several years back listed in a phone directory on the Killyvally Road, or in Killyvalley.

I still remain uninformed on who the first McNearys were, if not James Mackkenary of Tirkeeran according to Pike's Survey.

We still don't really know the relationship between the three Magheramore McNeary households in 1896 headed by James, Nicholas and Matthew.

We don't know the relationship, if any, between those three above, and the following groups we have find:
James McNeary and James Jr. of Magheramore, father of Martha and Margaret (which of the above 3 do these James belong to?)
Thomas McNeary of Gorran (est born around 1880)/Dr Alexander Mcneary etc
?/?/William/Matthew/William John m Florence White/7 children     The bakery folks at Garvagh
?/?/Randal or Reynold McNeary and John McNeary of Mettican
?/Matthew James McNeary of Luney m Mary McCraken around 1824
?/?/ James McNeary m Elizabeth McLoughlin at Limavady/Matthew, Mark, Eliz, Mary (Our McNeary family knew this group well, but I don't know the relationship)

Each of the groups above is fairly well defined, to an extent.  There are other McNearys found in the area, which we'd like to tie to these families.  And if all these families are related, we'd like to deetermine the linkages.

Help is appreciated.  Please Email we with questions or suggestions.  Bill McNeary.

McNearys  (not in my Garvagh McNeary group)  listed in Family Search in UK or Ireland - not including any in the US or Canada. If you can help connect any of these with other McNearys, you are invited to share that information.  Anything helps - parents, siblings, children, birth, marriage, death, and corresponding places.

An observation of sorts on Family Search information and distribution of McNeary and similar names.

A quick look at Family Search (and some other records) this is how the various Mc(A,E,I)N(a,e)ry families were in the pre-20th century listings in Ireland, either births or marriages.  As we learn more, we will amend what we show below.

McNeary/McAneary/McAnarry/McNery/etc

CO Antrim - Kirkiniola, Carnmoney, Templepatrick
CO Derry, specifically Garvagh, Magheramore, Mettican, Luney, Gorran, Kurin, Town of Londonderry  (The largest concentration of McNearys appears to have been in CO Londonderry)
CO Down - Dohaghadee, Kilcoo, Warringston
CO Donegal - Letterkenny
CO Monaghan -
Belfast
Dublin

Glancing (quickly) at searches for Mcenery, McInery, McInerny etc, in Family Search, I surmize the following as related to Ireland:

McEnery      mostly Limerick area
McEniry       mostly Limerick area
McInery       CO Claire   and perhaps Lanark Scotland, and Inverness Scotland
McInerny     CO Claire  and an occasional Limerick IR
McNerny      Wigton Scotland, and Lanark Scotland, and CO Cavan IR
McNary         Wigton and Renfrow and Aberdeen Scotland, and CO Down IR
McNairy        mostly Glasgow, a Wigton, a West Lothian Scotland, and none in Ireland in Family Org
McNair         Lanark, Govan, Argyll, and Stirling Scotland, and CO Donegal IR
McNear         Stirling, Perth, Lanark Scotland, and CO Down IR
